Hi, Tell us your name, what you do, and about your business. Please do mention the monthly revenue for our readers as well.

Hi, my name is Brittney Scarlett. I own a service business that specializes in fitness recovery, pain management, and wellness therapies. Our main service and what got us into this type of business is whole body cryotherapy, a cold therapy aimed at reducing overall inflammation in the body.

We also offer compression therapy, LED light therapy and facials, electric stimulation, and cryo skin for fat loss and toning. We started off in a stand-alone model in our tiny hometown of Carmel, CA. After appearing on Shark Tank in 2016 we were offered a deal from Fitness International to open up our business inside of one of their fitness clubs starting in Mountain View, CA.

Our current location opened in November of 2017 within City Sports Club. Our monthly revenue last month was $28,000.

What’s your own background. Were you always proficient in this business, or did it just strike your mind one fine day?

I have a bachelors in political science which have nothing really to do with what I am doing today. Previous to starting this business I worked as a paralegal, personal and executive assistant and marketing coordinator.

I found my self unhappy and unfulfilled in my previous roles and was unsure of what it was I really wanted to do, in a way this business sort of just fell into my lap as my brother had just started looking into cryotherapy in 2014 when I had just left my last job and timing-wise it was the perfect distraction while I figured out what it was that I wanted to do.

Together we ended up researching the small existing industry at that time and shortly after we decided to embark on the journey together and opened up our store later that year in our hometown of Carmel, CA.

What went into designing the initial product? Can you take us through the actual process?

In our first location we only offered whole body cryotherapy, everyone thought we were crazy and that we needed more offerings but we were very confident in the therapy and wanted to keep it simple.

In hindsight I think we could have been even more successful had we added more therapies but for that time it worked and helped us to prove that cryotherapy was a service that people not only needed but wanted.

When we opened that store back in 2014 we had very little funds to work with, most our money went towards the cryosauna and the little left we used to fix up our little hole in the wall spot, slapped some paint on the walls, put in some new flooring and next thing you know we were in business.

Talk us through the process of the launch of your business

That first day we only had one customer, our mom’s best friend. She happens to have rheumatoid arthritis which cryotherapy can help significantly with reducing the pain. Once word got around more and more people would come in to try out this amazing new technology but it did not happen overnight.

As much as we had support from friends and family they weren’t the ones coming in to pay for our services, that took time to build. Our big break was after we appeared on the local news, we saw a significant increase in business as more people started to find out about us.

How is your repeat customer rate like? Can you take us through how you attract and retain customers?

Our retention rate is very high, cryotherapy specifically is something that needs to be used pretty consistently to get and maintain best results so because of this people can also tend to get somewhat addicted to it.

We attract customers by offering an affordable unlimited membership, we include all our services in this membership making it a one-stop recovery shop. They know that we offer the best pricing for cryotherapy not only in the area we are located but in all of the US which keeps them coming back.

Our membership is also an auto-renew membership unless canceled which helps us to keep members as they want to keep their membership rate.

What is the current situation? How do you see yourself in the next 12 months?

Right now we are currently looking for another investment as where we stand today we just have our one successfully operating a store in Mountain View. Ideally, we’d like to roll out more locations in several fitness clubs, we see the future as most every fitness club offering our wellness and recovery services.

In order for us to make this a reality we must not only expand our team but invest in marketing resources which have been something, we have always struggled with. In fact, in 5 years we have really done little to no marketing, I can only imagine where we’d be if we could find a marketing platform that works for us.

I would hope that in the next 12 months we have received another round of funding and are in the process of opening up more locations.

As a woman founder, do you see this as only financially uplifting? Or otherwise too? If yes, then how?

Honestly, I have yet to make much money at what I am doing, we have made many sacrifices in order to do this business some of which has been financial from not taking a paycheck and to taking the minimum to give our business the best chance to succeed.

Of course, I hope one day that might change but I realize these things do not happen overnight, financial rewards are of course uplifting in my opinion. I find it uplifting in other ways though, to be a woman in charge of my own future and not having to answer to someone else, there is something empowering about being a women business owner/entrepreneur.

What are your key challenges today? How are you planning to tackle those?

Our key challenges stem back to our lack of marketing, we have yet to find a marketing platform that works and is fearful of wasting more money on things that do not deliver.

I would hope we can find someone who can help us with this, we are still looking. Our other challenge is our lack of infrastructure, with just two of us it’s hard to get to where we want to go, we need to work on securing another investment and in addition to that a team that comes along with it.

Which are some resources, books, articles or podcasts that have been useful to you, and would share with your readers

Some classic business books that I would recommend are “How to Win Friends and Influence People” by Dale Carnegie, and “The One Thing” by Gary Keller. Both of these books can be applied to any type of business which I love.

For podcasts I really love The Skinny Confidential Him and Her, it’s a husband-wife team of entrepreneurs, they often have great productivity tips and motivational guests from an array of different backgrounds, they are very captivating.

Many times, women feel that businesses are for only for men. What’s your take?

It’s sad that we feel this way but unfortunately, I understand why. I can say my industry specifically is mostly male-dominated, at times I have felt insecure and even intimidated.

I feel as a society we are shifting away from this as more women are getting out there and showing that women are bosses too and in fact may even do it better. Businesses are definitely not only for men, but times are also changing and these men still out there who feel that women have no place in business better watch out.
